A Martha's Vineyard of the Mind.

Friday, December 12, 2008

An inland glacial eratic. All the big rocks on the Vine-
yard are eratics, having been dragged by the glacier
from points north. This one is in a natural rock garden
in the Indian Hill section of West Tisbury. It may
have been plucked from a ledge in New Hampshire
or Vermont 15 thousand years ago. A good geologist
could probably tell where it came from by what
kind of rock it is.
Picture from 1985.

This rock I call The Traveler. It's slowly moving around
the island counter-clockwise. Since I've been following
it's progress it's circled the island twice.
(Just kidding-only once)
Photo from 1990.

The same scene as below, November 2008.
Erosion can claim several feet of the clay cliffs every year, or sometimes in a single storm.
Why we live here. This is
the beautiful "old paint"ed
cliffs of gay head, with a fine rock
specimen, looking dream-
like in late September
light. 1990.

And here is the rock almanac for Tuesday, Dec. 9th.
(as Garrison Keillor might put it).
This well known sea mark sits at the base of the Gay Head cliffs, and was named "The Leviathan" by
the son of a famous American artist and one time
land lord of ours.

Another view of the big
guy.
This rock on the Vineyard's north shore emerged from the cliff in 1988.
For years it had sizable shrubs and maybe even a small tree growing on it. Now there's just a last bit of soil. The cliff has eroded back at least 50 or 60 feet in 20 years. I'll post an old picture of the rock still in the cliff...when I find it.
Personal news--------recent testing results >>> excellent!

We'll give the video project a break for now. But here's the rock of the day. Two actually. They're at Spring Point in Chilmark. (and have been for a while).

Hmmmm......Errrrrrr.

This morning I tried to load a 35 second video. After 3 1/2 hours it still hadn't finished. So what's going on me wonders.
Here's 18 seconds of my endless hours of water phenomena videos. It took about 10 minutes to upload this tiny bit. Is there some way (I wonder ) to speed the process? And improve the quality?

I've just discovered another blog also named old paint, and it's quite good. So I suppose I should come up with another name. But then would that be the end of this 2 day old blog? And where did all those strange symbols come from in my last posting?

< Cedar Tree Neck twins. November.
I'm trying to get the hang of this blogging program. Wish I could control the layout better.
Some where below is a short video clip I'm posting just to see if I can. It may require a special player-we shall see. It's a subway exit turnstile somewhere way downtown in New York. More to come.
Revolving doors, subway exit- lower Manhattan.
One of three "split rocks" that I know of on the Vineyard's north shore. I've been photographing interesting rocks for years--------more rock portraits to come.
